At American Waste Control, our absolute number one goal is caring for Tulsa’s environment.
Each day, we work hard to find the most innovative approach to recycling waste so we can turn recycling from just a good idea…to a simple and meaningful part of people’s lives.
Our new Materials Recovery Facility or Mr. Murph, as we call it, is a great example of the kind of innovation that’s shaping Tulsa’s future.
Mr. Murph greatly increases our ability to separate recyclables from trash and generate clean recyclables to be reused in the manufacturing process for new products.
The result is a dramatic reduction in the amount of recyclables thrown away and a decrease of the overall impact our waste has on the local environment.
Our recovery rates from single stream recyclables such as cardboard, paper, plastics, aluminum, steel cans and glass are as high as 95% and a direct result of our $10 million upgrade of our recycling facility.
Through Mr. Murph’s automation, we’re now able to process and reclaim almost 400,000 pounds or 200 tons of recyclables EVERY DAY. Multiply that out even further and you’ll see the impact we’re making:
In ONE MONTH, the recyclables we process save enough water to fill 24 Olympic size swimming pools.
In ONE YEAR, we collect and process enough mixed recyclables to fill the BOK Center (give dramatic pause) six times.
Since 1987, American Waste Control has recovered ENOUGH RECYCLABLES TO FILL the CITYPLEX and BOK TOWER 17 times from top to bottom.
The resources we’re conserving are substantial. But, our passion for innovation doesn’t stop with recycling.
We are also using technology to harness the waste that Mr. Murph cannot recycle.
Our solution?
Our waste to energy plant at our landfill. Here, we’re utilizing methane gas made by decomposing waste to power over 4,800 homes in Northeast Oklahoma. Think about that a moment: your trash is helping meet the power needs of over 15,000 people!!
Our system is not only generating electricity, but also offsetting fossil fuel consumption and reducing greenhouse gas to allow for cleaner air and water.
We believe, in the end, it’s all about providing for a better Tulsa. That’s why we’re so passionate about finding new ways to implement greener technology. Not only are we reducing the impact of waste on our city through recycling, but we’re using waste to produce the energy that Green Country depends on.
Isn’t it time we imagined the possibilities?
At American Waste Control, that’s exactly what we do everyday…we imagine the possibilities of greener living and find the most innovative approach to improving people’s lives.
